Penélope Cruz is made up to look authentic and unglamorous as Italia, a vulnerable working-class woman assaulted by a prominent surgeon (played by the film’s director, Sergio Castellitto) who then conceives an obsession with her.
Not a great part for Cruz, but the movie does at least approach her with something other than the traditional celebratory/lifeforce reverence. Portraying Laura Ferrari in the film, Cruz, 49, dove deep into the private life of the co-founder of the sports car company as she dealt with her husband who was having an affair with another woman.
